If you happen to be doing the groceries one day and, much to your surprise, you suddenly spot your favourite actor or singer sorting through a shelf of products, the first thought that would probably sweep through your mind is - "I"ve got to get his or her autograph!"
Only one of two things can happen. One, you might get too star-struck to even do or say anything - or two, you forget every sense of human decency and pounce on the unsuspecting celebrity like a rabid dog. Hopefully, you will never find yourself doing the latter. It will only result in a possible restraining order.
Celebrities are people too and they deserve to be treated with courtesy. If you see them in a public place and you are itching to get their autograph, assess the situation first and decide if it is appropriate to do so. If they are eating at a restaurant, for example, it would be best if you wait for them to finish their meal before asking if they could sign your paper napkin.
When approaching a celebrity, flash your best smile. It is nice to show some excitement, but not to the point where you seem like a deranged stranger ready to strike with a cleaver. Always be polite. Being demanding will only make you seem rude. After you have been handed your autograph, say thank you and go on your way. You might be tempted to stay and chat, but celebrities need their privacy, too. By making a good impression, it is possible for celebrities to remember you the next time you meet them again. They might even voluntarily give you an autograph!
