| EPHEMERA & MISCELLANEA 68. ILLUSTRATED VICTORIAN TRAVEL JOURNAL By D V Hardy who toured south west England in 1899 recording the many towns and villages he visited, the people he met, interesting and amusing incidents, visits to well known buildings and sites, illustrated with photographs, prints and postcards. He describes his journey by the Great Western Railway from London to Falmouth ‘behind the powerful bogie engine known as the Flying Cornishman, first stop Exeter 194 miles, the longest booked run of any train in the world.’ His journeys took him to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. Wookey Hole caverns were explored with the aid of candles and kerosene which was poured over the rocks and lit ‘giving an awe-inspiring effect’. At Glastonbury he inspected the Holy Thorn, at Wells the cathedral. ‘Tedious local trains with tiresome changes brought us to Bridport. In this dull town we had to wait some four hours for the Lyme coach. The sea is nearly two miles away, the inhabitants are nearly all called Zachariah, Obadiah, Micah, Uriah and similar.’ When Hardy asked if there was a museum in the town he was told ‘O lor, us hev no museum but there’s a good fish market on Saturdays an ee can git zum rare old stingo at the King of Proosha oop yon.’ An attempt to get a meal at a large hotel failed: ‘after ten minutes of knocking, ringing and exploring a 15-stone typical west of England dame appeared yawning (not behind the hand) enquiring ‘who are you and what would you be pleased to want? ’When Mr and Mrs Hardy told her the kind of meal they would like the woman offered mackerel, ‘Is that the extent of your culinary resources?’ ‘You can have it soused up if you like and I can recommend our beer.’ Mr and Mrs Hardy thanked her and left, ‘hungry we arrived, famished we left Bridport’. However, the ten-mile drive to Lyme made up for it, three powerful horses almost flew there in spite of the great hills. ‘The people of Lyme seemed very old fashioned but the coachman disagreed. ‘Backward guv’nor aint the word, barn door savages I calls ‘em and ignorant as well – and superstitious.’ Other towns visited by Hardy included Torquay, Brixham, Dartmouth, Bath, Plymouth, Falmouth, Truro, Looe, Polperro and others, all with descriptions and comments in Hardy’s individual style – incidentally all very legible in ink. The journal, 100 sides including about 70 with manuscript, has been expensively bound in modern half morocco, gilt title. A wonderful bit of social history £140 69.
