MANUFACTURE OF MUNITIONS Sixteen full page black and white prints by the artist Joseph Pennell contained in the Times History of the War 1917 including blast furnaces, making pig iron, the shell factory, finishing shells, gun shop, fitting guns in turrets, gantry, balloon shed etc. Very good condition. Would frame well £10

3. REPORT BY HER MAJESTY’S COMMISSIONER IN CRETE on the Provisional British Administration of the Province of Candia Presented to both Houses of Parliament July 1899, in its 14 pages the report states that the disarmament of 19,000 firearms has been achieved and a gendarmerie of 660 has been raised (all Cretans, about 240 Moslems, 420 Christians). Interesting document in good condition £12

GOVERNMENT LEAFLETS World War 1 Government insurance against air raids, premiums from six pence, World War 2 ‘How to Protect Your Home, Your Business, Your City’ (appeal for fire parties), and a 1939 City of Westminster leaflet authorizing vaults under pavements to be used as public air raid shelters. All three are single sheets in very good condition £5

10. THE POCKET PICTORIAL OF ST JOHN by the Scripture Gift Mission 1939, Active Service Edition, issued to service men in World War 2, complete gospel of St John with four colour plates, approx 3in x 5in, good condition £3

12. DECORATIONS TO CHAPLAINS A collection of magazine cuttings of wartime prints, mainly World War One, relating to chaplains together with listings of medals and decorations awarded, roll of honour etc, all contained in a binder £5

HORSA SQUADRON by Will Morrison, publ by William Kimber 1988, 176pp illustrated, the 1st Independent Squadron of the Glider Pilot Regiment which ferried large equipment such as anti-tank guns and jeeps etc in World War 2, with a vital role in North Africa, Italy, Greece etc. Ex Library, fair £3

14. DO YOU WANT YOUR WIFE TO WORK AFTER THE WAR? 40-page booklet prepared by the American Historical Association in the series ‘G I Roundtable’. Many statistics included - nearly 5 million women in the U.S. were working in munitions and other essential industries at the end of 1943. This booklet tackles the whole question of working women and what was likely to happen at the end of the war. Some illustrations, good condition £6

15. THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL at Edinburgh Castle, 36-page souvenir booklet printed and published by Valentine & Son Ltd with sepia photographs of the memorials, attractive cover, no date but probably late 1940s, very good condition £4

THE HAZARDS TO MAN OF NUCLEAR AND ALLIED RADIATIONS HMSO 1956, 128pp, presented to Parliament June 1956, including the nature of radiation, the effects on the health of the individual, genetic effects, radiation from natural sources, occupational exposure, contamination, nuclear warfare etc. Staples have rusted and now missing, otherwise good £5

THE GRAND NAVAL REVIEW Illustrated London News Supplement April 26th 1856 with hand coloured engraving of a man-of-war, full page engravings of warships, Royal Family embarking at Portsmouth, Queen’s yacht, illumination of the Fleet, Manning the Yards, Portsmouth floating bridge and many smaller engravings and reports. Also a very large spectacular folding engraving (42ins in length) of the British Fleet at Spithead (a little foxed) with tax stamp in red. A fine lot for the naval collector £25

29. SOUTHERN RAMBLES FOR LONDONERS by S P B Mais, published by the Southern Railway 1936, 144pp with sepia photos and maps, 20 rambles you could do in the thirties, but many could you do today? Good condition £8

30. BRITISH RAILWAYS WESTERN REGION System map c1948 just after nationalization. Shows complete system and connections and separate maps for more populated areas such as London, Birmingham, South Wales etc. Excellent condition £4

31. RUSSELL’S PORTSMOUTH ABC TRAVEL GUIDE for December 1942, gives services by rail and steamer to Isle of Wight, the Midlands and North with timetables, fares and map in this wartime year. Adverts for hotels, shops etc, fair condition £5

Numerous black and white pictures of groups and individuals including La Fille Du Bled, Jungle Merveilleuse, La Plus Belle Nuit D’Amour De Don Juan, Rapsody, Kidnapping, Entre Les Blondes et Les Rousses, Circus etc plus several of Josephine Baker. Taken in the 1950s/60s, they are mainly of the coast, beaches and harbours although I note Crantock Post Office and Stores, Hale Towans P.O, St Mawgan village, Residence of Mr Edwards, the bonesetter at Sladesbridge, spectacular aerial views of Tintagel, Port Isaac and Polperro, others of Newquay, Porth, Polzeath, Porthcothan, Trebarwith etc. Condition very fine unused. 74 cards £50

CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORELAND Collection including street scenes at Rosthwaite (2), Keswick, Broughton, Carlisle, Cockermouth, and a couple of Seatoller village, also steamers on Lakes Windermere and Coniston, steam train with passengers on Ravenglass & Eskdale Rly, coach and horses descending Honister Pass, mill at Ambleside, churches, a religious gathering, country houses and Lakeland views, nice lot in good condition. 42 cards £36
