9. SECOND WORLD WAR MEMORIES When your saucepan sprang a leak you used a Potmender to repair it, simply a tin washer, a cork and a screw - just follow the instructions on the card and your problem’s solved. I have a card with three Potmenders, although rather rusty now but should still work! Also an empty packet of Wills’ Woodbines and two LPTB bus tickets (I also had a George Formby record but somebody sat on it). Wartime lot £8

FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW 1949 32-page programme for September 10th/11th with photos of 45 different aircraft such as the Viscount, Marathon 2, Solent Flying Boat, Ambassador, Dove, Canberra 1, Comet, Lancaster, Meteor etc, lists all stand holders and pilots taking part in the programme, good condition £9

15. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY Report of Accident to a Member of the Public, completed form by George Clarke travelling on the 7.10 Birmingham - Leamington train 17th Jan 1942 which ran into the rear of the 6.45pm ex Birmingham causing Mr Clarke to be thrown across the compartment injuring his head. Good condition £10

16. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY Report of an Accident involving Company’s Road Vehicle, completed typewritten form following an accident to a pedal cyclist at Sparkhill who rode into the rear of a GW Parcels Van on 13th August 1940. Form has a little damage at right, otherwise good £7

17. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY Report of an Accident involving Company’s Road Vehicle, completed typewritten form following an accident involving a horse-drawn van which was thrown on its side at Birmingham on 17th April 1945, no serious injuries and the horse was OK, form in fair/good condition £10

18. GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY 1912 typewritten letter from Superintendent at Paddington Station re an injured Guard at Tyseley but compensation was not allowed as the accident happened during his dinner hour. Good condition £6

70. OFF TO THE RACES A parcel of horse racing ephemera. Papers include The Man in the Moon (5 copies from 1908-11), Gale’s Special (7 from 1910) and Warwick’s Weekly (6 from 1926), all containing runners, riders and owners, lots of tipsters and their adverts (‘The Wonderful System’, ‘A large income from a well-tried and almost infallible system’ etc etc’). Condition rather mixed. There are also 17 Race Cards from 1950s-60s including several Point-to-point (Taunton and Badbury Rings). There are a few other interesting items including a bookmaker’s permit for 1967, also an impressive large double page engraving of Goodwood Races from the Illustrated London News of 1877. Lovely lot for the racing enthusiast £25

72. HANDWRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED TALE OF A TIGER This volume c1900 is titled ‘The New Tale of a Tub’ and contains four very fine pen and ink drawings, three of which feature the tiger. Two Bengalis have discovered the tiger in a barrel and the tale recounts what happened in 12 pages of verse. A fascinating item with the finest quality drawings £85

73. MANUSCRIPT VOLUME 1870 ‘J Smith’s Volume of Extracts’. 506 pages of miniscule but legible manuscript on many topics particularly Royalty and there are many pages of hand-drawn music. Thousands of hours work here - an example of what the Victorians did with their time. Nicely bound in half morocco with gilt lettering £40

74. ‘WONDER WISPS’ Subtitled ‘A Philosophic Fantasy’ by the Rev Robert S Anderson, 1948. A notebook containing 20 pages of a handwritten narrative poem similar to Betjeman. UNIFORM FOURPENNY POST Medical certificate from Metropolitan Life Assurance Society, 4 page questionaire signed and with quite lengthy report on the state of health of Thomas Workman of Reading, postally used on the LAST DAY of Uniform 4d Post with manuscript ‘4’, Reading circ date stamp of Jan 9 1840 on back and London arrival date stamp of Jan 10 1840 (Uniform Penny Post began on Jan 10). Scarce item £50

96. 1847 ENTIRE LETTER from London to Wellington, Somerset with a PAIR of imperf 2d Blues, margins almost complete (just cut into lower right) tied with a London Chief Office numeral ‘4’ and leaving one stamp with a clear Queen’s profile. Attractive £60

97. 1855 ENTIRE LETTER from London to Marseille, France, with a PAIR of 2d Blues scarce perf 16 tied with a London Chief Office postmark. Other cancels are PD in red, AMB CALAIS in black and other transit markings, letter in French £60

98. 1855 ENTIRE from London to Lyon with a PAIR of 2d Blues scarce perf 16 tied with London Chief Office and AMB CALAIS plus other markings £50

99. 1856 COVER from London to Great Yarmouth with 2d Blue perf 14 tied with London Chief Office cancel in black and Yarmouth Norfolk circ dater stamp in blue on front. London back stamp £20

100. 1859 COVER from London to St Malo, France, with a PAIR of 2d Blue Plate 7 tied with London Chief Office cancels and PD in red, also has AMB CALAIS canc on front and four other postmarks on back. One stamp a little aged. Pairs are uncommon £30

101. 1868 COVER from London to Malta endorsed ’Via France’ with 6d Lilac Plate 6 (affixed sideways), tied with London Chief Office cancel, Malta and London date stamps on back £50

102. 1879 ENTIRE LETTER from Leith to Malta with a delightful notepaper heading depicting Leith Distillery with its many buildings and smoky chimneys. The stamp is the scarce 8d Orange tied with a Leith duplex cat £300 on cover. Backstamped with a fine Malta circ date stamp, horizontal crease not affecting stamp £75

105. 1887 EMBOSSED STATIONERY ENVELOPE postally used in London with a fine strike of the Hoster Experimental cancellation, backstamped with firm’s rubber stamp (Morgan & Co). Difficult to get in this condition £20

106. STANLEY GIBBONS PRICED CATALOGUE 1904 containing the stamps of Great Britain and British Empire. The Penny Black was catalogued at 25 shillings mint, six pence used. The hardback covers are a little creased but the contents are good . 295 pages and 56 pages of adverts £5

Matters dealt with include letters to and from the King, stamp cancelling machines, Christmas arrangements, starting salaries, appointments, vacancies, awards, display of posters, typing tests, public relations, telegrams and telephones etc. Also leaflets on metered mail machines and mail room equipment, National Savings certificates, Treasury Bonds etc. Lot £20
