7. THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN: August – October 1940 Air Ministry Account, HMSO 32pp, very good condition £4

8. EUROPE SINCE VERSAILLES BY LOW A history in one hundred cartoons with a narrative text by the famous cartoonist David Low, published by Penguin in 1940, with world leaders of the 20s and 30s including Churchill, Roosevelt, Hitler, Stalin, Chamberlain, Lloyd George, Molotov, Hoover, Eden, Benes, Franco, Deladier, Goring, Mussolini, and others. A little cover wear but good for this scarce item £10

9. EUROPE AT WAR BY LOW A history in sixty cartoons with a narrative text by the famous cartoonist David Low, published by Peguin in 1941. All the political and military leaders of 1939 and 1940 are here. In good condition although the cover has come adrift but this could easily be repaired £8

10. ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE Large mounted photograph of airmen and airwomen at Accountant Officers’ School, Bulstrode Park, Sept-Nov 1941, 44 personnel are pictured and each one named. Image size approx 9,5in x 6in (overall 14in x 10in). Excellent condition £12

11. WOMENS AUXILIARY AIR FORCE Three photos each with large groups of WAAFs, one with 68 personnel (photographer John Burton & Sons, Leicester) 11in x 4.5in; one with 35 personnel (photo by Herbert & Sons, Windermere) of similar size; and one with 25 personnel (photo by King & Hutchings, Uxbridge) 8in x 6in. A marvelous study in expressions – and only one out of 128 women wearing glasses! Interesting trio for £20
12. ‘SALUTE TO VICTORY’ How State Express cigarettes helped to win the war 1939-45. Lavish booklet with gold embossed covers, very well illustrated in colour. It states: ‘Tobacco has become an increasing solace and refreshment to the fighting man. A good cigarette supports morale. It cheers the weary. It soothes the wounded…. It produces a large revenue to finance the war effort…’ Illustrated with wartime and bombing scenes, also shows the manufacturing process and State Express mobile canteens. Cover has faults but contents good. A scarce booklet – the first I have ever offered £15

13. WARTIME HANDY POTMENDER When your saucepan sprang a leak you used a potmender to repair it, simply a tin washer, a cork and a screw. Just follow the instructions on the card and your problem’s solved. Three potmenders on card although rather rusty now but should still work! £7

14. INFANTRY TRAINING Volume 1, Infantry Platoon Weapons, Rifle & Bayonet (all arms) published by the War Office in 1948, 123pp, illustrated with correct positions to be taken up. Cover tatty but contents generally good £4

16. NAVAL MENUS Luncheons for gold-braided ones including a couple of U.S visits to Portsmouth in 1947, Royal Albert Yacht Club 1948, U.S training ship 1949 and NATO visiting fleet 1960. Four have been hole punched. 5 menus £6

17. ‘BLAKE DIVISION’, HMS ST VINCENT Large mounted posed photograph by Lawrence of Gosport of 116 uniformed sailors at the naval base in November 1957 (total size approx 13in x 10in), good condition £12

28. BOYS’ CINEMA A weekly magazine, this is number 93, Sept 17th 1921, including ‘A Peep Behind the Scenes’ showing how some stunts are performed and the precautions taken. 76. 1970 WORLD CUP Daily Express publication of England’s defence of the World Cup brought out just before the final 16 teams did battle (and England knocked out), 48 pages with many black and white and colour photos including Alf Ramsey holding the Cup, Jeff Astle smoking a Woodbine, Alan Ball ‘More than a runner’, Hurst wearing his terylene baracuta. Good condition £8

77. 1972 MUNICH OLYMPICS 12-inch stereo record by Polydor with ‘Folk Songs of the World’ by Kurt Edelhagen and his Orchestra with songs from twenty different countries (England is represented by Mr Big Ben). Very colourful sleeve with flags and football. An unusual and scarce item £20.

BASTARD CHILD 1802 Printed document on watermarked paper stating that Sarah Lawrance of the parish of Kingsclere in the County of Southampton, a single woman, was delivered of a male bastard child at the Workhouse in the Parish of Kingsclere on the twenty second day of February 1802, and the said bastard child has become chargeable to the Parish, and that Lazerus Piper, late of the parish of St Marys Reading, did get her with that child. Signed with the mark of Sarah Lawrance. Very good condition. Scarce £25

90. BODY WARRANT Two page printed document issued by a Justice for a full or mitigated penalty after a Common Levy Warrant in the sum of £25, signed by Robert Powell, Justice of the Peace in the County of Cardigan (Aberystwyth) 1st October 1850, small tears but very collectable £7

103. JERSEY MAP Large scale Ordnance Survey map 12.6ins to one mile taking in St Johns and St Marys, Waterworks Valley, Reservoir, Sorel Point etc, published 1935 and printed during the war on ‘war substitute paper’. Very good condition £7

104. CHRONIQUE DE JERSEY Channel Islands daily newspaper with French text, 4pp. I have a few copies for November 1894 in good condition, each £4

105. GUERNSEY WEEKLY PRESS for May 15th 1945 with the Proclamation from the Lieut-Governor ‘that the German Occupation which we have had to endure since June 30th 1940 is now ended.’ 4pp in very good condition with all the news and interesting articles £6

106. 1926 GENERAL STRIKE Daily Express for May 13, 4pp, a few small tears £4

107. CLIFTON PARISH NATIONAL SCHOOLS (BRISTOL) Salaries and wages accounts for eight different months during the years 1897, 1898 and 1899. Each sheet gives name of head teacher, teachers and P.T teachers and their annual and monthly wages. Each has signed for the monthly amount over a Victorian penny lilac stamp when the amount is over £2. Typical annual salaries were £100 to £200 for a Head, £60 for a teacher, much less for P.T and monitresses. A total of 70 entries. Nice bit of history in excellent condition £20

108. HAMPSHIRE PRAYER AND HYMN BOOK FOR USE IN COUNCIL SCHOOLS Published for Hampshire County Council by Holbrook & Son 1904, small booklet with red card covers containing prayers and 211 hymns plus index, rusty staples but intact and in fair condition £5

111. CO-OP Certificate awarded to Olive Thomas in March 1920 by the Co-operative Union Ltd for passing the Junior Grade exam in the subject of ‘Co-operation’. Also Co-operative Insurance Society’s policy details, certificate for a Brace 1931 (to be replaced if broken), and three full books of Saver stamps redeemable by the Co-op. Lot £6

122. 1925-26 GREETINGS Small ornate embossed envelope with large letter B (Brewer) containing a Christmas card for 1925 from the Brewer family and a celluloid card with calendar for 1926, very good £4
