AUTOGRAPH ALBUM OF NOTABLE PEOPLE Collected mainly in the 1940s/50s it includes W R Morris (Lord Nuffield), Lord Dowding, Lord Birdwood, Sir John Harding, Alan Bullock, Basil Henriques (London magistrate), George Cansdale, Charles Wheeler (BBC), Alistaire Mars, Basil Spence. Politicians include two Speakers of the House of Commons (George Thomas and Horace King), ‘Bessie’ Braddock, Jennie Lee, the flamboyant Gerald Nabarro, Tony Greenwood, William Wells, John Peyton, Fred Bellenger, Ralph Morley. There are religious leaders including W R (Dean) Inge, the Bishops of Jamaica and Rhodesia and other clerics. The world of entertainment includes members of massed brass bands (Alex Mortimer, Frank Wright and others) and Manuela Sykes. Famous painter of horses and President of the Royal Academy Sir Alfred Munnings is a scarce autograph as are many of the others. The collection consists of almost a hundred signatures and in many cases printed biographical details are included. These are loose giving an untidy look but a little time spent on the collection would improve the presentation. A fine and interesting collection from 50 years ago! £145 77. RAICH CARTER’S SOCCER STAR Weekly football magazine, I have a run of 13 copies from 1953 with articles and pictures of the soccer scene over 50 years ago. Raich Carter was an England international, played outside right for Sunderland and Derby County before, during and after the second world war, won an FA Cup medal in 1946 with Derby, later went to Hull City. REIGATE, SURREY Photographic reproductions (on photographic paper) of the town from the mid Victorian period to 1930s. There are some delightful scenes including the old Post Office with postmen and delivery cart outside, butcher’s shop with meat hanging, a few busy thoroughfares with shops – Lipton’s, Maypole, tobacconist, Hunts greengrocer’s, upholsterers, milliners, chemist, Northover’s House Furnishers, a couple of restaurants, the Hippodrome, Cinema Royal showing Flame of Love and Forbidden Love, Swan Hotel, Old Wheel Hotel, Lesbourne Hotel selling fine Reigate Ales, and more. Traffic is interesting – early cars and horse-drawn. There’s a lovely snow scene with early bus, a large parade of soldiers with rifles from the Great War watched by large crowds and finally Reigate Borough Police, thirty good men and true, constables, sergeants and inspector.
