1. FIRE OVER LONDON the story of the London Fire Service 1940 - 1941, published by the LCC, 1941, 32pp. This publication tells the story of one of the most hazardous jobs of the war, baptism by fire. With vivid photographs of the great fire of the City of London 1940, fair condition £6

NEPTUNE Wartime Monthly magazine from Continental Publishers & Distributors Ltd, mainly of the part played by the British and Allied Navies in all theatres of war including the Battle of the Atlantic, convoys, ’Masters of the Med’ etc, very well illustrated, also some military and aviation. 4. SEMPER FIDELIS: THE SAGA OF THE ‘NAVVIES’ 1924 - 1948 by H E Hancock, published by The General Steam Navigation Co, 1949, 140pp, illustrated. The story of London’s oldest steam shipping company (formed 1824). Good coverage of the wartime period, appendix lists decorations and awards to staff, chairmen and secretaries, list of vessels lost during the war, past and present fleet etc. In very good condition £18

6. ELLERMAN’S CITY LINE CRUISE in the cruise ship ‘City of Nagpur’, 14th - 27th July 1934. Daily sheets (14) of the 14-day cruise giving the itinerary including visits to Lisbon, Algiers and Palermo, meals, organised sports and games, community singing, George Hardy’s Melodymakers, fancy dress, chalking the pigs eye, cigarette and tie race etc. My, what fun they had! TRAIN SPOTTER A collection of railway photographs in album (removable) mainly 3.5in x 2.5in, some a little smaller from the mid-1950s taken by an enthusiastic train spotter whose journeys took him to Cardiff, Cardigan, Corwen, Welshpool, Oswestry, Cleobury, Birmingham and area, Shipston-on-Stour, Bristol, Tal-y-Lyn etc. Predominately LMS and GWR of locos, stations, sheds, a few signal boxes etc, a fascinating and nostalgic work of an amateur. 93. AMERICAN CIVIL WAR I have two copies of the NEW YORK TRIBUNE from the Civil War period dated 29 March 1862 and 3 April 1862, each with much war news. Each is of 8 pages, plenty of adverts and in generally good condition. Each £10 or the pair for £18
94. SALEM REGISTER for 3 April 1862 with AMERICAN CIVIL WAR NEWS reporting whether ‘the rebels enlisted Indians who committed unheard of atrocities’. Also plenty of adverts for cure-alls, train times etc, good condition £10
95. DEATH OF QUEEN VICTORIA Mourning issue of THE TIMES dated 23 January 1901, 20 pages all with black borders. There is a long editorial and articles on her life and reign, also Mail and Shipping Intelligence. There are interesting adverts including a full page for Bovril, ’The dieting triumph of the age’ as well as ’the soldier’s friend’. First page has a little wear, otherwise very good £15
96. THE TIMES 1902 CORONATION ISSUE dated 11 August 1902 with 20 pages. Gives a detailed report on just about every aspect of the crowning of Edward VII and the procession through the streets. There is a full page illustration of the interior of Westminster Abbey. There is the usual ’Latest Intelligence’ and even the cricket scores (gives County matches and Australians batting averages!). Minor wear, very good condition for its age £12
97. THE NORTHAMPTON MERCURY for 26 January 1828 with red Tax stamp. Adverts and notices such as the Northampton & Leicester Post Coach leaves the Dolphin Inn every morning except Sunday at 9 o’clock and returns at four o’clock in the afternoon, there is also an ad for a contractor to mend the Kettering & Newport Pagnal Turnpike Road, but I rather fancy the large house and shop to let at Daventry, also a church pew (not sure about that). There is also a report of the birth of five children, all alive, but later died, good condition £12
98. THE SOUTHPORT VISITER (that’s how they spelt it then) for 11 May 1893, a very large format newspaper, 8 pages packed with local and national news and adverts, some tears, about average condition £5
99. THE NORTHWICH CHRONICLE for 14 June 1913, 8 pages of local and national news, trouble on the farm, workers can’t live on 17 shillings a week, plenty of adverts, some faults but collectable £3
100. DAILY MIRROR ‘The Picture Paper’. I have a good selection of this daily newspaper from World War One (1914-18), each with an average of five complete pages of pictures with many vivid scenes, plus news, articles and interesting adverts. I can offer single copies at £4, 3 for £10 or 7 for £20 (if you have any preferences such as military actions, naval, aviation or home front, I will do my best to accommodate your wishes)

102. SUNDAY TIMES OF MALTA for 14 January 1945, 12 pages of the latest war news plus the supplement recording the Royal Visit - the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester’s Christmas Day tour en route to Australia. Only average condition (a few tears and stains) but this must be scarce. Must be worth £4
103. CHURCHILLIANA Picture Post for 25 May 1940 with Britain’s new war leader, Illustrated London News for 27 November 1954 Churchill 80th Birthday number and Sunday Mirror for 31 January 1965 Churchill Funeral number. Each issue packed with Churchill interest. Trio £20

109. TOWN CLERKSHIP OF THE BOROUGH OF LANCASTER 1896 Application by Charles Thornton for the position of Town Clerk which sets out his very considerable qualifications and experience. This is backed up by references from the Town Clark of Cardiff, the Chairman of Barnoldswick UDC, Mayor and Town Clerk of Nelson. Each item has been printed (not typed). Wonder if he got the job.
