1. BOER WAR Folded card 4.5in x 6in with four Everlasting Silver Leaves overprinted ‘To my dear friend with kind regards, Remember me from South Africa’ - the leaves still in good condition. There is a stuck down photograph of ‘The Heroes of Ladysmith, The Meeting of Generals Buller and White’. Published by Hahn of Cape Town. Lovely little item with just a few minor blemishes £12

2. MILITARY CHARACTER AND PARTICULARS OF SERVICE RSM William Green, Royal Engineers, born in Bangalore, enlisted 10th March 1891, bugler, served in South Africa, Kings and Queens, mentioned in despatches 1916. Character states absolutely trustworthy and reliable, has tact and discretion, uses no bad language … etc, etc, signed by Lt Col Peake. Good collectable condition £5

3. AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCE 22-page booklet with the lecture given by Major D Chapman-Huston at Larkhill Camp, August 1916 £2

INTRIGUES OF THE WAR: STARTLING REVELATIONS HIDDEN UNTIL 1922 44-page booklet by Maj-Gen Sir Frederick Maurice, reprinted from the Westminster Gazette 1922, in which he examines the political conduct of the war by Asquith and later by Lloyd George, the mistake of keeping so many troops in Palestine, the plan to remove Haig and much more. Explosive reading at the time. Good condition £9

A R P WALLCHART OF GASES USED IN WARFARE, WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW TO TREAT THEM 4-coloured chart 15in x 10in published by Memory Charts Ltd giving types of gas (tear, nose, lung, blister), technical names, nature and effect and remedies. Most feared were chlorine, phosgene and mustard gases. Reverse gives further details. Designed to instruct ARP volunteers in the second World War. 15. BOMBED CHURCHES AS WAR MEMORIALS published by the Architectural Press of Cheam 1945, 48pp with many illustrations and plans detailing suggestions and plans for some of the 17 City of London churches which had been seriously damaged by enemy action. £8

16. OUR BOMBED CHURCHES published for the Victory Thanksgiving Fund by the Baptist Union c1945, 41pp of text and photos of the damage suffered during the Second World War to Baptist churches including a few Continental. Cover rather poor but contents good £5

UNITED CHURCHES OF BOURNEMOUTH ‘In the King’s Service’, 32-page hardback of the National Services Club for men and women of H M and Allied Forces at the Queens Hotel Bournemouth 1940-46, well illustrated with some groups (you’ll probably recognise someone if you lived in Bournemouth during the war), good condition £6

18. THE YELLOW NAZIS by Stanton Hope, a Hurricane Sixpenny booklet published by W H Allen 1942, 64pp. A short history of the Japanese people written at the height of the war just after Pearl Harbour, here described as the ‘yellow peril’, the author pulls no punches, good condition £7

19. MOVEMENT INSTRUCTIONS for Sgt Barker RAF, printed sheet requiring him to report with baggage at the UDF Shuttle Service, Pretoria, South Africa, at 07.30 on 24 November 1944. There follows many instructions such as inoculation for yellow fever if going to Middle East or East Africa, no cameras, currency restrictions etc. Interesting item £6

20. VICTORY NUMBER of the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS May 12 1945 with war leaders, some in colour, coloured cover of the victors by Terrence Cuneo, good condition, scarce £10

CHANNEL PILOT Part 1 comprising the Scilly Isles and South Coast of England from Pendeen to Foreness, thirteenth edition 1947, published by the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty, 352pp. Includes currents, tidal streams, sea levels, signals, cautions, life-saving service, buoyage, measured distances, communications, fuel, dockyards, pilotage, fisheries, quarantine regs, meteorology. There are numerous illustrations and a large index. Cover is stained and soiled but contents very good £8

POSTAL & PHILATELIC

91. THE LINE ENGRAVED POSTAGE STAMPS OF GREAT BRITAIN PRINTED BY PERKINS BACON & CO by Edward Denny Bacon, published by Charles Nissen & Co in two volumes 1920, a history of their production during the 40 years 1840-80 compiled from the records of the firm, with 15 plates of collotype and other illustrations including a study of the Essays, Proofs and Specimens of the issued stamps. The story starts with the 1839 Treasury Competition and negotiations between Rowland Hill, Henry Cole and Perkins Bacon. The dies are dealt with in great details, also obliterations for the stamp, colour trials, ’small crown’ watermarked paper, lettering the plates, imprimatur sheets right up to the surface printed issues of 1880. A rare 2-volume work, seldom offered, I have pleasure in offering this for £400
